〜でした

Formationnoun + でした

でした is the past of です, for saying what something was. It attaches to nouns and na-adjectives but never to i-adjectives, which carry their own past tense. Keeping that split straight is most of what N5 asks of adjectives.

   They were school children then.

5. 間一髪かんいっぱつ！危あぶないところでした。

   That was a close call.
