N5 grammar

〜ませんでした

masendeshita

Polite past negative

Formation

ませんでした says politely that something did not happen. It is built by parking the past of です behind ません, which is why it runs so long. Most learners reach it a beat late in speech, so it is worth drilling until it comes out whole.
