N4 grammar

〜ようとする

youtosuru

Trying to do something

Formation

The volitional plus とする describes an attempt, usually one caught in the act or one that failed. It is about the effort rather than the result, which is what separates it from てみる. In the past tense it often means you were on the point of doing something when something else happened.
