〜ことができる

Formationverb (dictionary form) + ことができます

ことができる says you are capable of something, or that the situation allows it. It is the long way round: Japanese also has potential verb forms, but this pattern works with every verb and asks for no new conjugation. Useful while those forms are still settling.

   I couldn't sleep.

   Reading a book can be compared to making a journey.

4. 彼かれは自力じりきで出世しゅっせすることができた。

   He could make his way in life.

5. 空そらに数すう千せんの星ほしを見みることができる。

   We can see thousands of stars in the sky.
