〜が(逆接)

Formationclause + が + clause

が joins two clauses that pull against each other: it is expensive, but I will buy it. It also opens a sentence with no contrast at all, the way English uses so before getting to the point. It is more formal than けど.

1. なるほどこの車くるまは小ちいさいが力強ちからづよい。

   Indeed this car is small, but it is powerful.

2. 金きんはないが気前きまえはよい。

   Poor as he is, he is generous.

3. そうですが違ちがいます。

   Yes and no.

4. 彼かれは背せが高たかいが、兄あにはなお高たかい。

   He is tall, but his brother is much taller.

5. 夏なつは来きたがやがて去さる。

   As the summer has come, so it will go.
